It’s important to understand that the things the enemy does, or attempts to do, to afflict Christians should be taken seriously. I have heard it said that we shouldn’t glorify the devil. Yes, that’s true, but if we are trying to walk godly, then we must have an understanding of how the enemy operates. Think of it like being in the military. You don’t just sit back and wait for the enemy to attack. You collect information and observe what the enemy is doing. If there is a real threat, action must be taken. It’s the same with us as Christians.
For example, it’s easy to get angry at someone in traffic and say or do something ungodly. Or, you’re having a serious discussion with your spouse and in your flesh, you feel like saying something that will cause an escalation. The enemy is lurking nearby. Don’t take the bait. Don’t give in to the enemy. Submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee (James 4:7). But these are examples we’re all probably familiar with that are easy to identify as possible enemy influence.
Paul said something profound in the context of forgiving someone who offends (in context). I believe however, the following verse applies to more than just the context because of the wording.
11 lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices. (2 Corinthians 2:11, NKJV, Emphasis Added)
To put it another way, we should be aware of the enemy’s devices. We should understand how the enemy operates so we can know how to fight from a position of authority that Jesus gave us. Using this “delegated authority” is a privilege and a blessing. But if we don’t use it, we can be attacked and that’s not what God wants. He gave it the us to use and He expects us to. So, be encouraged that you can stand up to the enemy and use the authority given to you to push back attacks.
